Athletics NSW, in partnership with Sydney Olympic Park Authority, are very proud to announce the creation of the 5K Anniversary – Sydney Olympic Park – a once-in-a-20-year opportunity to experience the Park like never before.
Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Sydney Olympic Park, hosts of the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this incredibly unique in-precinct and uniquely remote experience will bring out stories, memories, and emotions from many who participated, created, officiated, volunteered, watched, or even just remember “The Best Games Ever”.
It is a chance for the general public – of any age, ability, or background – to take in history, and to be a part of history, of Sydney Olympic Park.
As part of the in-precinct experience in Sydney Olympic Park, Athletics NSW has created an accessible five-kilometre route, marked out with over 50 floor decals and various maps provided to all registrants, highlight the iconic locations and legacies of the Sydney 2000 Olympics & Paralympics. The route includes passing the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Cauldron, tributes to Cathy Freeman and other Olympic Champions, the famed “Blue Line” of the Marathon, many of the Olympic venues used for both Games, and many more legacies of an iconic period of Australian history.*
The duration of the event will last just over six weeks, from Tuesday, 15th September – Thursday, 29th October, which coincides with the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and the Closing Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, respectively. At any time during this anniversary period, participants can run, walk, or roll their way through the course at their own leisure, and take in the history of Sydney Olympic Park.
Participants in the Anniversary 5K – Sydney Olympic Park event will also receive a one-of-a-kind digital finishers’ medal, go into the draw to win one of four pairs of Mizuno Wave Sky 4 shoes (valued at $250), an access to a very limited, commemorative range of merchandise that celebrates the event and the history of Sydney Olympic Park.
From the team at Athletics NSW and Sydney Olympic Park, we are extremely excited to have the opportunity to look back at a period of time in Australia’s history that changed not only sport, but our identity as a nation, via a five-kilometre route that celebrates the best of Sydney 2000, 20 years on.
*Please note that all COVID-19 regulations will be required to be adhered to by all participants, including those living regionally in NSW/outside of NSW. For those outside the Sydney region, a remote 5K experience will be available for this event.
