New solar bin trial sees success in first month

Solar Bin

24 Aug 2017

Sustainability continues to be a driver at Sydney Olympic Park, with a new trial of solar bins that has seen an immediate reduction in the number of litter collections, reducing from 84 down to 9 collections in four weeks.

These new solar bins have a number of benefits including eliminating overflowing bins, reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion, utilising renewable solar cell energy, no birds, pests or vermin accessing rubbish, and dramatically improving cleanliness of public spaces.

The bins use solar power to compact the waste within them, and they use Wi-Fi to communicate when the bin is full and ready for collection through sensors under the lids.

With the trial still in its early stages, Sydney Olympic Park Authority will continue to work with Quayclean and Smart City Solutions to monitor progress and continue to use innovative measures to assist with the delivery and maintenance of the Park.
